Ever walk pass a retail shop and find out that there’s a branded makeup product available selling a lot less than the price you’d normally see compared to other outlets? Well, chances are it’s probably a fake. Though we’re not saying cheap makeup products are all less in quality but because they tend to be a lot more tempting then the actual ones, many often fall for the trap and end up with a low quality makeup product or worse, having skin problems upon using them. So here’s a few tips you can refer to if you ever spot any cheap makeup products and want to make sure whatever you put on your face is safe for you.
First of all, distinguishing real and fake makeup products. So, how do you do it? Well, logically thinking, a fake is always cheaper (duh) and yet people still do fall for the same trap simply because the price is tempting. Furthermore, packaging and fonts of the makeup product, like any other imitations, will differ from the original product. Counterfeits usually have uneven fonts, misspelled words or incorrect shade names printed. So make a thorough research and learn to compare between a real and a fake which are often kept in lower-quality plastic or metal casings, with ill-fitting mirrors. Another quick method is to contact the makeup company directly and send them the details of the product you bought including pictures, bar-codes as well as the packaging.

On the other hand, distinguishing quality makeup products is a good way to find out which product can be bought with a lower prices but still provide the quality you expect. First off, not all quality products come in exquisite packaging. Sometimes a simple packaging is good as it is due to the quality they can give. If you’re not allowed to test the products you want, then be cautious of thin and flimsy plastic or cardboard.
Next you’ll want to take a look at the ingredients at the packaging. Ingredients listed first are usually the heaviest in concentration and goes lower down the list of the ingredient label. If you’re not sure about the names of the ingredients, then google them to get an idea of what you’re about to apply on you’re skin so that you can make a better judgement on your next shopping trip. Here's a quick tip on how to read makeup ingredient labels if you're wondering ;)

The next big tip is to read reviews but not trusting them COMPLETELY. This is because there are some companies that hire people to give positive comments on their products online. Usually a great product will naturally have positive comments while a low quality one will have negative comments one after another. It's always safer to go with the comments especially if customers are able to state the condition of their product or describe how good/bad the product is in detail. However, the safest bet would be to go by the average star rating on the product and not by one or two extreme reviews.
You can also find a makeup artist FROM A SALON or a professional supply store instead of a makeup counter in department stores (who’ll usually end up promoting their own brand). The professionals deal with makeup products everyday so it’s always safe to ask for their opinions.

If you’re unsure of the product, you can always ask for a sample to test out whether it’s suitable for your skin to aid your decision in buying one so that you don’t end up wasting money for the wrong decision. Another tip about buying quality makeup is that it shouldn't come off quickly after only applying it within an hour. This goes for your eye-shadows, blush and also your lipsticks. It’s always better to take your time to find the right product as an alternative to the branded ones so that you don’t regret later on.
